How To Sign Your California Title
You must use a blue or black ink pen when signing over your used car title, and you must sign your name exactly as it is shown on the face of the title.
The following VOIDS your Title (do NOT do any of the following):
- Signatures in incorrect section
- Signature does not match your driver license
- Erasure – do not erase or cross out anything on your title
- White out
- Rips or tears
- Mark outs – Trace overs
- Pencil or Marker usage
WHERE DO I SIGN AN CALIFORNIA TITLE?
California titles require two signatures. Both are on the FRONT of the title.
The first is in the center of the title and is labeled “Signature of Registered Owner.”
A second signature is required for the odometer statement. The field is labeled “Transferor/Seller Signature” and is located on the lower left.
MULTIPLE OWNERS
Plural ownership may require all signatures of all owners on the face of title depending on the conjunction.
AND- Requires both signatures
/ – Requires both signatures
OR- Requires one signature
AND/OR- Requires both owners’ signatures
DOES A LIENHOLDER APPEAR ON THE TITLE?
If there is a lienholder listed on your title, the title must be signed off and dated or stamped by the lien holder. If the title is not signed by the lienholder, then an original lien release will be needed from your lien holder
How to Get an California Duplicate Title
If your title has been lost, stolen, voided, or damaged beyond recognition you will need to have it replaced.
You can apply for a replacement title online or by visiting your local California DMV.
Time frame to get title online: 4-6 Weeks Time frame to get title in person: 4-6 Weeks
Get A Duplicate In Person
Step 1. Complete a REG 227.
Step 2. Visit your local California DMV.
Step 3. Submit your application with your $20 fee (cash, cashier’s check or money order).
Step 4. Wait for the duplicate title to arrive in the mail.
